Gear Up

GEAR UP, which began in 1998, stands for: Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs.

GEAR UP TN is a grant provided by the U.S. Department of Education and administered by the Tennessee Higher Education Commission for the purpose of expanding the college-going culture in Tennessee. McNairy County was awarded funding to provide direct services to the cohort group of current 7th graders through graduation and first year postsecondary education, as well as services for seniors in McNairy County Schools.

GEAR UP TN Goals are to: 1)increase the academic performance and preparation for postsecondary education for GEAR UP students 2)increase the rates of high school graduation and enrollment in postsecondary education for GEAR UP students and 3)increase GEAR UP students’ and their families’ knowledge of postsecondary education options, preparation, and financing.
